Why Fire Fighters? 

 

You'll get a slightly different answer each time you ask me, but part of the reason I'm painting is to discover that reason myself! 

 

I do know there is an element of storytelling in anything that involves rising that draws me in. Those stories I collect as I paint reflect my own experiences. I was a kid when my dad collapsed unexpectedly and the paramedics were called. I remember also when my baby brother was sick with a high fever and myself back against the living room wall watching the fire fighters as they worked on him. There were also the more amusing (luckily) story when my sister set her school uniform on fire and hide its charred ruins in the bathroom. Its no surprise that one of my brother was a fire fighter and smoke jumper in his wild youth. 

 

Having family members who struggled with and succumb to anxiety and depression and dealing with my own grief and loss, I wanted to do something for the first responder community who work through trauma on a daily basis. I believe in helping those communities who are at high risk for physical and mental dangers while performing a service for their communities.
